The Irish BioIndustry Association was formally established within the Irish Business and Employers Association (IBEC) in 1998. Its primary mission is to support the development of a biotech sector in Ireland.
It draws its membership from all sectors within the biotech industry as well as service providers and research institutions and state bodies. IBIA works closely with Government and the research community to help build a strong and thriving biotech sector in this country. It is a full time member od EUROPABIO and has been active on a number of fronts including Biotech patents, regulations on contained use and delberate release of GMMs and GMOs and promoting research to the industry. IBIA participated in the the develpment of the Enterprise Ireland Biotech Strategy.
IBIA was an active participant in the Technology foresight exercise which gave rise to the establishment of Science Foundation Ireland(SFI), with consequent prioritisation of biotech. IBIA works hard at promoting good North-South links on the island of Ireland and is involved in BioIreland 2002 along with a number of bodies North and south of the border, scheduled to take place in Dublin in November 2002.
